Cohorts.Art

"Chucho". This piece is named after Ralph's elderly chichuahua Chucho, who passed away a few weeks after our visit. A wall box sculpture, in brown clay, high fired in a gas reduction kiln. There are scribbed lines, splotches of flashing slips, and a square well with green glass inside.

"Desert Ice" is my favourite; I love how the glass started grabbing some carbon in a heavily reduced and intensely hot aftmosphere. The clay barely started bloating at this high temperature, which is impressive for a mid-fire clay. A wall box sculpture, in almost black clay, high fired in a gas reduction kiln. There are scribbed lines, raised "cables", and a round well with turquoise glass inside, ringed with brown. There are bolt heads sticking out.

"Green Annex" makes the third piece in this set, which I cannot separate. I was planning on selling these, but ultimately, I'm keeping them, as they mean too much. There are scribbed lines, and a square well with blue glass inside.There's a "side-cup attached", with green glass within, and a bolt head on the other side wall.

During my 1-year @cohorts.bsky.social program, our group, mentored by Sam Harvey, met in N. Mexico at Ralph Scala's desert studios. We all brought some bisqued works (no small feat in airplane luggage) to fire works in his wood & gas kilns. Here are 3 pieces I fired there.

A jumbled stack of colourful little objects that can be held in your hand with what looks like maps on them. The base surface is in soft shades of pink, yellow & green, with pastel glaze dots and colour pencil lines linking the dots together to form networks. Two of the objects look like abstracted figured, one kneeling, one reclining on its side. I made this thinking of the people who have been forced from their homes unto roads around the world by conflict, war, famine, crime, climate change and more, and are seeking to find a new place to call home or at least somewhere safe.

As part of my year-long Clay Cohorts (@cohorts.bsky.social), my mentor challenged me to try terra sig on smaller works. I came up with these #Erratics, which can be arranged in any way. This particular set speaks to forced migrations and looking for a new home. #Ceramics #ForcedMigration
