So all of this to say: Today is my grandmother's birthday and I happened upon this video. Somehow, it feels guided.

She taught me to bake. She taught me that every animal is its own individual and to treat them as such. She loved me and she passed away almost three years ago.

One thing we did often together was sing "You can call me Al" by Paul Simon. We would just burst into song at any time in the car.

She helped raise me from my earliest days until I as six, and even after I spent after schools and weekends with her almost exclusively until I went to high school. Even then, I spent many a weekend in her house, helping out at the flea markets stalls she would run.

She taught me to read and spell. To count. She drilled me in my times tables. She bought me book after book, as many as I could read and almost as quickly.

I was her only grandchild and she intended to make sure I was as spoiled as possible, and as experienced. As educated. (yes, that's me)

My grandmother was one of three constants in my life, those being my grandmother, my mother and my (great) Aunt "S", who is effectively a second mother to me and has been since my earliest days.

But my grandmother...she was my champion and my guide and my constant companion in my earliest days.

I don't talk about it often, but I'm a fairly spiritual person.

Today is the birthday of my grandmother, which was always something of a private thing with us because her birthdate is the inversion of mine. (That's all the hint you get.)

A short thread about my grandmother;

The dichotomy of hating my ex-husband and knowing he's a terrible fucking person and still being *so* fucking stoked he got to meet his effective childhood heroes/movie heroes and that he's out there living his best goddamn life.

Both things are true. I married him for a reason after all.
