It’s going to sound quaint, but the best way to resist an AI takeover of the humanities is to assign physical books, sit around, read them, and argue about ideas. Academic has become such a competitive arena, that we ourselves are trained to look for the winning angle, instead of the best education.

Spanish teacher friends - any level - have you experimented with project-based learning instead of traditional exams? I would *LOVE* to hear about what has worked well for you and what has presented problems. Here are a couple of questions and observations that I'm struggling with at the moment:

Ibn Verga's 'Shevet Yehudah' is full of great schtick: Here's a bit from no. 8: “Our Lord King! I fear God and I will before him tell you what I know!” “It’s possible that you fear God,” the King observed, “but you also love money. Speak, for you will immediately receive a great reward.”

I'd like at add a few things to this. (1) humanists have not been able to convince any political party that curiosity-driven humanities research is a public good that should be funded using tax dollars. Republicans don't believe this, but neither do Democrats.

Went to my local library this morning to do a bit of research for my current book project and my goodness such a life-affirming space! There was an adult being taught to read on the next table, children enjoying story time, countless people taking out books. So grateful for our libraries ❤️
