I'm here to check out your philosophy and other non-fiction book recommendations. Here's a Google Drive folder where I upload all the Open Access books I've reposted on my timeline, chopped up into chapters: http://bit.ly/46dsE7S

Ooh, good book. The only thing I vividly recall from it was his adversion to big cities and later air travel, which is why he lived in a cabin in the woods basically and travelled between Wales and USA by boat every year.

When something is very clear then obviously it has to be researched in an ancient literary tradition of a specific region in the Middle East.

Oh, good, the people who killed Aaron Swartz for downloading millions of papers for his research into climate crimes give you 100 papers per month for free! Yay! You'll have to prove you're not a robot by identifying what is a bus only 25 times to do so.

Tried to translate his book on atheism. Couldn't do it, dropped out of the contract. He had literally copy-pasted whole sentences from Wikipedia. His whole argument was the tired "actually atheism is also a kind of religion", also don't try to improve society even somewhat. Made a personal decision:

I regularly had to ask it to write me a little python script to find keywords in PDF's and do several different things with the results (copy file, highlight results, crop them, etc) until I thought to ask it write me a thingy with GUI. Sure, it took more than one prompt, but not much more.

Enjoy your blissful unawareness of the mass of abduction accounts with elements of sperm and ovary extraction and sex acts, both willing and unwilling, with alien-raised human servants, human-alien hybrids, and aliens with fabricated human genitals. You really really really don't want that noise.

I can see it. Papers where almost every statement is backed by citations vs. papers that read smooth but citations are an afterthought if not non-existent.

The problem with Christianity is that it's never even been tried.

Ah, the untold stories, written down, printed, published, distributed, sold and bought, now sitting in a pile, all still untold.

philosophy because the world has once again expanded, in an unprecedented rate, and it's much easier to stick to your guns than to open yourself up to so much plurality and ambiguity. It takes effort to syntesize, none to close off.

Read somewhere that when Alexander expanded the Greek world, these were the two responses: hedonists found eastern knowledge, celebrated and synthesized it, and thr stoics decided to close themselves off from the rest of the world and tend to theit own garden. Maybe stoicism has become the "bro"

Seconded. Physical cosmology is currently in crisis because it looks like there are old galaxies in new universes, physical laws may not be uniform across the universe, etc. But sure, "simple is better".

Some people can handle cold. After AMOC collapses and Europe will regularly experience -45C like Siberia, I bet 1-2 million people will still live and eke out an existence on the continent.

We collectively imagined the mysterious infection around Barney Hill's genitals? Dude had to get skin grafts all because of our conceptual misunderstanding.

Pratchett's Colour of Magic has a description of an old person one would gladly "help over a style". It always makes me wonder where on the Discworld are there turnstyles? Takes me out of the magic world every time.

Why only synonyms? Even Aristotle constantly harped about the distinction between synonymy, homonymy, and the third one that we don't mention in polite company.
