This was an excellent discussion. As an evolutionary philosopher, I’d just like to add the point that we are a species governed by the dual inheritance of genes x culture. It should be normalized to focus a life on the development of a robust and lasting culture. That’s a happy childfree choice.

We can move beyond the capitalist model and save the climate – here are the first three steps | Jason Hickel and Yanis Varoufakis Capitalism cares about our species’ prospects as much as a wolf cares about a lamb’s. But democratise our economy and a better world is within our grasp, say Jason Hickel and Yanis Varoufakis

"There are three necessary conditions for the transformation of our economy from a dead-end dictatorship into a functioning and ecologically sound democratic one."

These sound amazing. I want to hear @zackpolanski.bsky.social talk to these guys about this.

Energy insecurity. Higher bills. Exposure to catastrophic economic consequences of Trump's wars.

That's what happens when you fail to shift fast enough to renewables, and cut back on support for clean energy.

Let's cut bills & create jobs through a clean power revolution.

Yes on Tomasello and stimulus-response. But I consider β€œconsciousness” more broadly. I see it starting with β€œaffect” along the lines of Solms and Damasio. Almost no agency or free will at this level of c, but still β€œsomething it is like” to be this simple.

First inkings of consciousness. Sensing and responding to biological forces in order to try to survive and thrive. It starts early.

β€œthe documents that have been released have extensive gaps suggesting the department is covering up for individuals involved in Epstein’s crimes, including Trump. We know at least one of the missing files contains allegations that Trump sexually assaulted a thirteen-year-old girl.”

NHS official pushed to add patient data to Palantir platform whilst also advising company

A lobbyist who worked directly for Peter Mandelson, on the Palantir board, and on the board of *four* NHS trusts.

Lobbying the NHS to hand over even more patient data to Palantir.

This absolutely stinks. Get Palantir out of the NHS. Sign my petition:

Ummm that’s not exactly how I remember it. I rather remember wagering that a pragmatic materialism would make more scientific progress than a pragmatic panpsychism (if there is such a thing). But let’s see the video 🧐

Another concern is that Trump knows Ukraine hasn’t had elections while they’ve been at war. Trump will clearly try to replicate this in America.

Turns out lowering bills, protecting the NHS and rebuilding our public services is really popular.

This is just the beginning - people are seeing through the attacks and demanding something better.

And we're making hope normal again - together.

Yesterday was a truly special day as I returned to my beloved Vienna to receive a prize for a book that I conceived and wrote in that same city. Moved by the presence of friends in the audience and so thankful to everyone who voted for me.

And our dean kicked off orientation week saying how vital good business leadership was to the world given its impact and sheer number of hours people spend at work. So, a bit of a contradictory message for us. Just like in the real world.

I’d be very curious to hear the synopsis of this (as a start). My corp strategy prof on day 1 of my Michigan MBA said, β€œthe purpose of a business is to make money.” Legally, considering fiduciary responsibility, he’s not wrong. But that’s a hollow way to view the world.

The islands go so much further down too. Philosophy -> ethics, politics, metaphysics, epistemology, logic, aesthetics. And each of those have so many subdisciplinary islands. There’s a need for generalists to stitch together the best of the specialists, but that is unsupported as far as I can tell.

I wasn’t happy with how I left our philosophy discussion, but on reflection it was much more about epistemology and what I think is the role of evidence. I’ll focus on that next time.
