New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani has joined Governor Kathy Hochul in calling for a national assault weapons ban. Mamdani emphasized that even strong state gun laws are only as effective as the weakest laws in other states.
We need more elected leaders & candidates to do the same.

Radical Republicans won a majority in Congress during the 1866 midterms. They helped pass the 14th and 15th Amendments, guaranteeing citizenship to all people born or naturalized in the U.S. and giving African American men the right to vote. /end

Federal officers in charge of maintaining order in the region during Reconstruction saw what really happened. “It was no riot,” reported General Philip Sheridan. “It was an absolute massacre by the police … without the shadow of a necessity.” /6

Things turned deadly when the sheriff and posse arrived. They fired into the crowd, killing dozens and wounding more than 100. Three white delegates were also killed and 17 wounded. In the aftermath, locals tried to frame the massacre as a riot. /5

Protesters gathered outside the Mechanics Institute while about 200 unarmed African Americans marched in a parade to show support. As the African Americans approached the building, the protesters harassed them. Isolated scuffles broke out. /4

On July 30, 1866, 25 state delegates reconvened the 1864 Louisiana Constitutional Convention at the New Orleans Mechanics Institute. The city’s mayor and the local sheriff strongly opposed the convention and formed a posse to disrupt it. /3

The Louisiana Constitution abolished slavery but the state legislature passed laws limiting the rights of freed people. Radical Republicans sought to write a new constitution that would eliminate the Black Codes that greatly restricted the lives of African Americans. /2
