Flying over snow-covered terrain under overcast skies can make height above ground hard to judge. Add falling snow, as seen in a 2023 Quebec helicopter crash (A23Q0038), and you have the recipe for a loss of visual references.

The TSB investigation into a 2020 helicopter crash in Quebec (A20Q0015) shows how flying in flat light can feel deceptively safe because visibility appears good, but reduced contrast and shadows erode depth perception: https://ow.ly/gaHX50YmpAm

The “avoid-at-all costs” approach to #IIMC accidents isn’t effective. When used together, training, technology, and procedures give pilots the best chance to stay safe.
