I may be wrong (cd be thinking of Evans-Pritchard), but I don’t think Warner was a Leaver during the campaign. I think he embraced Brexit once he saw it as inevitable & thought it was best to get behind it. Brexiters will be able to discard him as someone who was never a true believer

On policy, he was more in opposition to her in 2017. In 2022, he mostly criticised her u turn on Ukraine and the lack of credibility of her “renovating of the facade” of her party

On the TV debates between the two rounds (which have a huge audience & influence), he was very courteous but extremely firm and on the offensive denouncing her links to Russia and Putin (both in 2017, when it surprised many, and in 2022, after she did a weak u turn after the invasion of Ukraine)

Someone cleverer than me should coin a snappy phrase to describe the opposite of what some people use to call “virtue signalling”. Vice signalling? Evil signalling? Vileness signalling?

There will be an inevitable ramp-up phase (if we get there!) and the danger will be if he then decides to withdraw before we are ready to stand on our two feet

But having seeing how the sausages are made within EU institutions, I am somewhat sceptical of our ability to behave like grown ups…

One of the problems (not the only one!) is how hard it will be to decouple on security matters without it becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy, or worse, without it being perceived as a hostile move by a Trump administration
