Strange priorities.
Oil and gas companies get tax breaks, and the fuel used by aviation still isnβt taxed at all.
Meanwhile the climate bill keeps growing.
We tax electricity.
We tax gas.
We tax train tickets.
Jet fuel though? Not really.
The climate incentives are⦠interesting.

When you look at the land maths, solar looks pretty efficient.
If biofuels need 50β100Γ more land than solar for the same energy, scaling them for flights becomes complicated.
Which does make βsustainable aviation fuelβ sound a littleβ¦ optimistic.

Emissions savings in aviation are often outweighed by year-on-year increases in passenger numbers. But when it comes to contrails there is potential for AI to have a positive impact.
But as always, the ultimate takeaway is that we need to fly less, consume less, use less.
Three weeks til our big fundraiser, the Night of Flight-Free Adventure. 12 epic flight-free stories using PechaKucha = a whirlwind of inspiration!

A new study co-authored by researchers from @tyndallcentre.bsky.social and Norwich Business School has found that countries with stricter and better-targeted climate policies cut carbon emissions faster.

Flying creates around 2,500,000 tonnes of carbon emissions every single day. That's equivalent to about 625,000 elephants worth of emissions.
There are only 450,000 elephants left in the world today.

If we used all those biofuels for planes, we would still only be able to meet 1/3 current aviation demand. In contrast, if we used that land for solar panels we could power the entire world for a year.
