Should students listen to music while they read and write? Probably not.
I spent most of my college years listening to CDs as I studied.
While music can boost energy levels and improve focus, it’s most effective before learning, not during. During learning, music adds to cognitive load, creating an unnecessary burden on working memory.

We asked 12th graders reading a complex text what they paid attention to as they read today. Here is a chart that captures what we discovered after conferring with them. Big takeaway… they notice a lot but don’t always have the academic words to name it. We just gave it a name.

Meeting with my college students about their final papers and almost all went over the page limit telling me they just got so into the topics. Choice is so important for writers of all ages! And now I get to read them all knowing each one will be different.

Last day of the senior seminar of the semester. My students presented their capstone projects and it was beautiful. One of them reflected, “I love how our identities were connected to our projects.” They literally applauded each other. Savoring this moment because they don’t all feel like this.
