These are all fine names with great traditions in the RAN. However, I do wonder if it is time for the Navy to face up to reality and christen our first HMAS Molonglo.

The Mogami-class include mine warfare capabilities so we could extend this to include names from the Huon-class minehunter coastal: HMAS Hawkesbury, Norman, Gascoyne and Diamantina.

Historical river names for RAN ships include the original 6 destroyers: HMAS Paramatta, Yarra, Warrego, Huon, Torrens and Swan. The River-class Destroyer Escorts reused some of these names and added HMAS Stuart and Derwent.

Which means if the upgraded Mogami-class frigate is selected for SEA3000 then there will be the opportunity to match the tradition of the parent Navy (the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force), continue a fine RAN tradition, and rectify the travesty of the ANZAC-class frigate names that they replace.

Naming of RAN Ships | The Sea Power Centre Royal Australian Navy

The RAN has a fine tradition of naming warships after rivers, including our first torpedo boat destroyers and the River-class Destroyer Escorts, the last of which was still serving when I joined the Navy.

Interestingly, the Mogami class frigates are names after rivers in Japan. Kym and other media saw the launch (and naming) of the future JS Nagara which is named after the Nagara river in Gifu, famous for cormorant fishing (顜飼 or うかい).
