Light Shard | The Audio NPC 🚶‍♂️

The Threshold defines “when” compression will occur.

It’s the exact point (in decibel) at which the detector will kick in and nag the processor to turn the sound down.

Most VCA (Voltage Controlled Amplifier) based compressor circuits tend to look somewhat like this.

This is a feedforward style design, where the detector is fed before the processing stage by the input.
Usually VCA comps can be quite transparent when used in practice.

The ratio of a compressor defines the “amount” of compression the processor stage will do.

So for a ratio of 10:1 (read ten-to-one) we say that “for every 10dB (decibel) above the threshold, only 1dB will remain.”

1:1 is linear, and means no change will take place.

3 types of dynamic processing:

Downward compressors control the loudest part of your signal.

Limiting prevents going any louder than a defined point.

Overcompression drastically reduces sounds that are too loud.

Layering multiple compression configurations has drastically changed the way I mix. Especially for vocals and bass design!

Last year I spent a great deal of my time delving into dynamics processing and experimenting with compressor combos. Which netted great results! 🎣

Focus on the difference, you’ll only see the difference.
Focus on the similarity, you’ll only see the similarity.

Positive or negative, neutral or chaotic.

Pick the plants you choose to water cautiously. 🌱
