Infographic titled “Human Rights Defenders, Climate Change and a Just Transition” — a visual summary of the report by the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders, presented to the 80th session of the UN General Assembly.
At the top, a green banner reads the title. Below it, key messages appear in colour-coded boxes with illustrations:

“Climate change is a human rights crisis” — text explains that changes in the atmosphere, ocean and biosphere are undermining the protection of human rights worldwide. Icons represent the rights to food, water, health, housing and life.

Another box with an hourglass illustration states: “Action needs to be taken immediately.” Beside it, text says that every delay increases harm, especially for people already most affected by injustice. A note reads “Climate injustice is social injustice.”

A section titled “Across the world, people are taking action” shows diverse defenders restoring ecosystems, defending forests, filing climate lawsuits and demanding a just transition. Text explains that people everywhere are calling on States to mitigate the effects of climate change and transition from fossil fuels, but “their calls have fallen on deaf ears.”

A light purple box with a police officer in riot gear illustration reads “Around the world, they face Repression.” It explains that many climate activists face obstruction, repression and criminalisation to protect private interests and the unjust status quo.

Another box reminds readers that these people are exercising their right to defend human rights, as guaranteed by the UN Declaration on Human Rights Defenders.

At the bottom, a banner urges: “States must protect them, engage with them, stop criminalising them.”

The footer provides a link to the full report: docs.un.org/en/A/80/114.

🌍 Climate change is a human rights crisis, and those defending our planet are human rights defenders. Instead of criminalising them, States should listen, engage and protect them.

The Right to Defend Human Rights in the Face of Climate Change Many governments around the world claim to support human rights defenders. Whether that is true is up for debate. But when it comes to climate activism, there is little evidence to support their claim...

People who are peacefully protesting, organising and advocating for action from their governments to address the effects of climate change, as well as their root causes, are human rights defenders.

Really pleased to launch this new report: based on extensive data, we expose Beijing's strategy to silence, deter and block NGOs at the UN.

The report was widely covered in today's investigation on China's transnational repression by @icij.org, @theguardian.com, @lemonde.fr, @elpais.com and others.

#Gaza — At #HRC58 I spoke out for Palestinian HRDs facing devastating crimes by Israel, most recently in the apparently targeted killings of medical personnel in clearly marked ambulances. There must be action by states to bring about a true ceasefire, end the occupation & ensure accountability.

A graphic highlights the story of Saharawi human rights defenders Al-Hussein al-Bashir Ibrahim and Khatri Dadda. At the top, the title "Out of Sight" appears in blue, followed by the subtitle "Human rights defenders working in isolated, remote & rural contexts." The main message, "ISOLATED FROM THEIR FAMILIES," is written in bold white letters on an orange background, accompanied by a location pin icon next to "Western Sahara." On the left side, a black-and-white illustration of the two men is displayed. Below, the text explains that Al-Hussein al-Bashir Ibrahim and Khatri Dadda are serving 12 and 20 years in jail, respectively, for defending the right to self-determination. They were moved to a prison over 600 km from their homes. Their families struggle to visit, and one’s request for transfer was denied. The visual is part of a social media campaign by the Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders ahead of an upcoming report to the Human Rights Council.
