Sometimes (especially recently) I accidentally fall asleep before I'm ready. Usually my glasses end up getting just a little bit bent when this happens, and I of course haven't turned the lights off. Thanks to Plague Daemon for capturing this small slice of my life!

Between covid and now AI, the world has been changing a bit too fast lately for my taste. It's been overwhelming.

Maybe by the end of this year there will be more clarity on this. Perhaps in hindsight I will look like the biggest doomer ever. Or, it might be like covid, where I feared it long before people around me appreciated that it would eventually become worldwide (even then I underestimated its duration)

But the future in which it keeps accelerating is a scary one for me personally. Selfishly, I'm not looking forward to the skills I worked hard for becoming obsolete. I think I'd lose a huge chunk of my sense of purpose, so the tech CEOs vaguely gesturing to a UBI (as if!) doesn't help either.

What is my personal conclusion? If AI capabilities level off near where they currently are (which there is no reason to believe they will), I think the results are manageable. I'm sure there would still be disruptions and maybe gains in some sectors from using existing tools more effectively

Creative fields have already unfortunately experienced major negative impacts from generative AI. However, a silver lining is that there is grassroots demand for human-produced media and many people value human connection in art. This will likely not be true for technical fields which get disrupted.
