Lack of support for freed victims of modern slavery
One of the current government’s first announcements was a promise to clear the backlog of 23,300 modern slavery cases it had inherited and help get the victims’ lives back to normal.
Speaking to @migrantvoice.bsky.social, we said:
"Survivors have the worst of both worlds: those who need support aren't guaranteed it, whilst survivors who want to return to work often can't because of immigration restrictions"

Each year, hundreds of modern slavery survivors are held in UK prisons. Many more get criminal records.
How are so many opportunities to identify and support victim-survivors of trafficking / slavery being missed?

Today marks 10 years since the Modern Slavery Act, which centered on support for victims of trafficking.
But trafficking must be stopped before it happens. With the Employment Rights Bill going through Parliament, there is an opportunity to address the conditions which allow trafficking to thrive.

Modern Slavery Act 10 years on.
No civil proceedings brought against any business under Section 54.
Survivors of modern slavery imprisoned for crimes they committed under the control of their traffickers despite Section 45.

NGOs Say U.K. Government Neglecting Victims Of Trafficking And Slavery
Several years ago the government quietly made it harder for people to seek protection after escaping slavery. A new report shows that move has had the predictable result.
"Survivors of slavery are now under more pressure to provide more evidence ... it is harder to challenge a rejection and access help"
We talk through the 30-day deadline for reconsiderations, + our report w/ @antislavery.org.
