While walking through a French market last spring, I snapped a photo of a pile of apples that caught the morning light. That became the reference photo for this painting, which I titled “Dappled Apples.”

The orange by Wendy Cope At lunchtime I bought a huge orange - the size of it made us all laugh. I peeled it and shared it with Robert and Dave - They got quarters and I had a half. And that orange, it made me so happy, As ordinary things often do Just lately. The shopping. A walk in the park. This is peace and contentment. It’s new. The rest of the day was quite easy. I did all the jobs on my list And enjoyed them and had some time over. I love you. I’m glad I exist.

Some friends from a painting retreat I did last year organized a painting challenge, and the reference photo made me think of the poem “The Orange” by Wendy Cope. I did the painting in my sketchbook so I could overlay the poem on top.

Reading this poem again was a balm after this hell of a week. 🍊

Sometimes when I post my art online I feel like a little kid running to their parents like “look what I made!!”

I’ve been working with polymer clay for about a year and a half, mostly making jewelry (which I love). I’d love to work on sculpting other things - I did these ornaments around the holidays and really enjoyed working a bit bigger. I think the worm is my fave 🪱
