And then in the credits scene they're basically emulating a synth chip in software and spitting it out via PWM with no buffers or timers to speak of, while doing more racing-the-beam effects on-screen. Just one half of that should already be maxing out the CPU and data bus. :|

Every single segment of this demo is something that the IBM PC is in principle incapable of doing. This is probably 100% hand-tuned, cycle-counted assembly code abusing register values in the CGA's CRTC and other hardware and racing the beam mid-scanline with insanely tight timings.

No sound chip to speak of, either; the PC speaker is just a buzzer hooked to a programmable timer as a crude square wave generator.

Most of the games that did run on that config relied on hacks to be playable and still suffered from picture tearing and visible painting. This was done with no sprites, no HW scrolling, no double-buffering, no definable tiles, and no sync interrupts, on a machine struggling to get 1 MIPS.

I feel what really rubs me the wrong way about the repeat cries of Bluesky's impending doom is the metric of posting rates, like we're all assembly line workers who must meet a certain throughput so we keep the company afloat.
