Probably the closest I can get without objective spoilers is the show is both about the expectations of Shinji as a child and about self-reflection and how our view of others' opinions of ourselves can affect our relationships with them.

I think that's a very valid reading of it and absolutely one of the core themes. There's a specific takeaway I got from the series but it involves spoilers that I don't want to get into. I can DM you if you'd like to discuss it further.
