It's publication day! Teaching LGBTQ Politics is now available from SUNY Press and all your fine book retailers (I'm assuming). You can also get it at Amazon, where the Kindle version is currently $38.

Critical perspectives article "Cisheteropatriarchal Institutions and the Representation of LGBTQ+ Legislators" by Hanna K Brant.
Article begins: "The 2018 election cycle was referred to as a β€œRainbow Wave” because of the record number of LGBTQ+ candidates seeking and winning elective office. The backlash toward the LGBTQ+ community during the first Trump administration, at the local and national level, invigorated queer candidates to run for office. Then, in 2020 and 2022, news headlines again called the election cycles a β€œRainbow Wave” (Debussy 2020; Lavietes 2022). According to the Victory Institute, the 2024 election marked a 1.1% increase in LGBTQ+ candidates compared to 2020, however, it was also a 4.8% decrease compared to candidates in 2022. Further, among LGBTQ+ candidates, the share of lesbian candidates dropped nearly 10 percentage points, from 26.7% of all LGBTQ+ candidates in 2020 to only 16.1% in 2024."

For our critical perspective on the 2024 election, @hannabrant.bsky.social argues that we should consider US legislatures as workplaces that shape the experiences of LGBTQ+ representatives.

I read this a while ago because it’s described as β€œlesbian necromancers in space.” Been meaning to read the rest of the series, which apparently gets weirder in a good way

The fact that such a headline would even have to exist in these times disheartens me. The 22nd Amendment is clear. But what does the Constitution even matter if the President himself isn’t clear he’s sworn an oath to uphold it.

I’m very honored to receive this recognition! Only 10 awards were given and Geneseo is small but mighty in the SUNY system, so it is very humbling to be among this group of scholars. I guess I really need to write this book now too πŸ˜…

The American National Election Study is an NSF funded publicly available, incredibly rich dataset that tracks American public opinion, vote choice and evaluations of government that has been in the field since 1948. It is an incredible resource for teaching and research and must be protected.

Years ago my mom and I connected over 2 of your books: she was reading Untamed & I recognized your name from reading Bad Fem. It was a really important connection for us at the time. She recently brought up Untamed given OH (she’s Rep and it helped her fight stereotypes) Your work matters, thank u!

Excited to share my latest research: Why do congressional staff leave? It’s not just about money. I find that staffers’ exit intention (desire to quit) and actual exit are strongly impacted by the extent to which polarization impacts their job satisfaction.
