The calendar seems to have taken on some kind of quantum time characteristics -- I am trying to understand how the day flits by in a blur, yet the week drags!

I know that I have cards I bought years ago, with the best of intentions to send to friends-- they never made it out of my desk though...

In my experience, that is unlikely...

I hold doors for people without expectations. I also don't say thank you, because helping another is something everyone should do.
BTW, if you're opening/holding the door for someone and expecting acknowledgement, that is not kindness, that's a transaction.

Maybe he has anxiety about speaking to strangers-- even in the simplest ways. OR acknowledging that he is disabled may be hard for him.

We cared for a crow who had been shot through, but somehow survived. We put foods down for him at the base of the feeder-- water, too. He adopted our home as his territory and brought two wives and had more than a dozen children while he lived.
