Everyone Is Beautiful and No One Is Horny - Blood Knife The human body has become a strange contradiction at the heart of the modern blockbuster. Sexy, yes. But sexual? No.

This piece from a few years ago came up in a few conversations I've had recently about a very different piece of media—and more talking about sexuality, as well as fitness/fascism—but I've been ruminating on it re gender/politics/aesthetics (like with Snyder).

Lifting has been nice for my mental health, making friends, and moving the world's heaviest microwave into a local arts space.

(I know I've posted this on another platform, too, I just think it's cool to go from 45 -> 90 in less than a month, even while things uh get worse)

So much global and close to me is truly quite bad, but today I did a 90lb deadlift set smooth as you'd like—when just over three weeks ago I hadn't lifted a bar! ever!—and it's nice to get small wins when big wins feel impossible.

Your brain and data may be in the internet, a world that is both everywhere and nowhere. But your ass is still firmly planted in the jurisdiction of somebody's courts. And police.

Proton is correct. The odds of you finding a company that won't comply with its local police are basically zero.

I keep thinking about how not only is ICE doing "security" for the World Cup in the US, in Canada IRCC officials have given statements saying they're upping scrutiny for World Cup attendees and that it's "not an avenue to seek asylum."

Drainville has also committed to achieving gender parity in terms of candidates in the next elections in October 2026 if he is elected leader of his party.

“But not just parity. I have made a commitment that we will also have candidates under the age of 30. So it could be young men, but it could also be young women,” he explained in an interview with The Canadian Press.

At risk of perhaps waxing too poetic, it was so lovely last night to just show up last-min without my usual hockey friend and realize that 1) even with the rough rhetoric, multilingual, multicultural, multi-generational spaces persist, and 2) maybe sports really is the friends we made along the way?

Duke University, Center for Documentary Studies Job #AJO31652, Postdoctoral Associate, Center for Documentary Studies, Duke University, Durham, North Carolina, US

This looks like a cool 2-year postdoc in oral history + social justice at Duke's Center for Documentary Studies! Due 3/16 (names of recommenders but not letters needed for this round).

Last night someone at the (full!) café-bar where I watch hockey grabbed me a table that opened because he recognized me as a regular, so while I'm riding that high I will absolutely not be telling anyone to watch less sports—it's good to have hobbies! Especially right now!

I am truly, earnestly impressed with how much sports you manage to catch—I'm worn out from one game yesterday! (Sadly was a shootout loss at midnight.)

Hey, ^this got 48,000 views! And I am also curious about stuff like games (~"Papers, Please") as a way to explore ways to make policy more "real" for people who are not us and don't mainline politics for uh too much of the day 🙃

I hear what you are saying is that someone needs to write a book first?

(And tbh I think the Letterkenny absurdity vibes are arguably more appropriate here, but also yes, sure, if we can make it a homoerotic drama, let's go for it)

Westminster Meeting House raided by Metropolitan Police again. Statement: “For Quakers, faith and action are inseparable. Peaceful protest, prayer and nonviolent action are integral parts of many Quakers' religious life.

Whilst we take the planning of criminal acts very seriously, we believe that this incident is a deliberate targeting of committed young people who want to make our country a more equitable place. This raid is part of a systematic stifling of dissent.

That this is the second time in a year that the police have raided our meeting house dramatically illuminates the broader trend in the UK of cracking down on those who disagree with the government. The right to protest is fundamental to our democracy. It's a key part of how people make their voices heard between elections.” – Oliver Robertson, Head of Witness and Worship

In 2024, the most common careers among previous postdocs were in research associate/staff scientist positions (30 per cent) and the public service (20 per cent), with only 15 per cent in tenure-track roles. This means that most doctoral graduates do not follow the so-called traditional academic career trajectory. So, are our institutions equipping us with the professional development needed to secure these early career positions?

Our data reveals that previous postdocs received training in career development (25 per cent) and research ethics (22 per cent), but less so in networking (14 per cent in 2024, versus 25 per cent in 2020). Yet 26 per cent of postdocs said that networking is an area of training of special interest to them.

15% of postdocs landing tenure-track roles is really quite bad, as is only 22% getting training in research ethics.

When I saw your post, I thought of Eula Biss's "On Innoculation," and engaging with vax-hesitant family/friends in early COVID—everyone got vaccinated in the end, but also that experience forced me to think about information, healthcare, and how to meet people where they're at (esp towards an end).

I'm half-kidding about Tierney/Brady (they are busy, but I live in MTL and am available to meet....), but!

I am serious about more TV/filmic depictions of banal immigration stuff in Canada. There is some great stuff out there, but more is so needed—especially TV, and for a more mainstream audience!

Part of this is because "I had an appt at 8 am today to talk to an immigration doctor to agree that the top surgery I had *in Canada* is fine doesn't make me inadmissible to Canada" happens on top of IRCC email hell, and I honestly think public opinions would shift if this was more known.

Labour's asylum policies will destroy lives and drive away voters

Labour's asylum and immigration policies risk violating international law and are politically self-defeating, writes Daniel Sohege.

I have a lot of questions that I am earnestly interested in answering (because I want to figure out what's going on), but I also know I am just not in the place to talk this through with someone who doesn't get this. It's not good.
