The hidden cost of "deplaytion" Ban social media for kids all you like – but don't ignore their crap playgrounds

"Tick-box" playgrounds, rising numbers of "no ball games" signs, play curfews...

My column in this week's @newstatesman1913.bsky.social on "deplaytion" - inspired by the Chernobyl-like property developer-run playground on my street:

I’ve used that review a lot in my work with teachers. It’s excellent. I think the boost in PG literature studies is especially interesting too. I wasn’t a huge fan of the NS article - gave me the same sense of dislocation I had as literatures undergrad (first gen etc) 🫣

Anyone else worried about govt funding cliff edges at the end of March? Safe taskforces, PEIAs, other pots supporting attendance and behaviour all stopping.

I get the need for a CSR and this govt wants to do their own thing, but it feels like a lot of stuff that's ending will just need reinventing.

Labour's breakfast clubs must learn from the NTP's failure Tackling food poverty is too important to repeat past mistakes. Here's how Labour can do better

Fantastic piece by @amcanning.bsky.social for @schoolsweek.bsky.social in response to our latest report on breakfast clubs.

πŸ₯£ 'NTP concluded with regret all round, a stark reminder of how good policy can falter in delivery. None of us want to see a repeat'

Feel like I’ve forgotten how to interact on a platform like this. Past few years on Twitter I just reposted work stuff and gave up on much else.
