I have seen a lot of comments on this, and I like to think that someone at the BBC is aware of both how many people pay attention to the Reith lectures and of the Streisand effect, and has shouted to the world that Trump is corrupt in a lawsuit-proof way.

Even the possibility of a different mechanical interpretation encourages a descriptive reason for applying the default mechanical effect.

TBF, done well even a mechanical system like D&D can have some interest added, with a dramatic description of a big hit or missing at a crucial point, but it's even easier to fall into unadorned arithmetic with a system that always has the same game-mechanical outcome for any given roll.

Even the advantage and threat interpretations of the many systems that include those sorts of mechanics (when it's something other than e.g. strain arithmetic or bouncing boosts) give a bit more interest to the game system talk than just "hit for 7 damage".

Not only are libraries free as others have noted, borrowing from them also pays the author. Not as much or as directly as buying a book, but more than pirating.
