15 year tradition of procuring a πŸŽ„ Christmas Tree by bike βœ”οΈ

The 1942 @newyorker.com cover was way ahead of its time!

A magazine cover, with a single illustration covering the entire page, and no headlines over the top. A hand illustration -- perhaps watercolors -- shows a snowy day and an empty road heading towards the viewer. In the distance, a cozy christmas tree store surrounded by green trees, some cut and some still standing, with a cozy cabin behind. In the foreground, a jaunty woman with hat and sunglasses and scarf bicycles toward us, with a christmas tree horizontally held on the front rack of her bike and a black scotty dog running alongside. She and the shop and the cabin are all in pastels; pinks and purples and white. Her white scarf and hat match the white snow on the store and cabin. It is a cheerful, jaunty, undaunted tone, and evenly spaced big snowflakes float down over it all. At the top the magazine name, The New Yorker, the date Dec. 19, 1942, and the Price: 15 cents. At the bottom is the signature of the artist, Garrett Price https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garrett_Price

It's time once again for my annual #treebybike post. This is the 12/19/42 cover of @newyorker.com, so one full year after the attack on Pearl Harbor. This would be the first real Christmas alone, or without a family member, for millions in the US. Gas and tire rationing had begun earlier that year.πŸ—ƒοΈ

I’ve never come across these in any of my adventures. They’re downright adorable.

Transplanting hummingbird sage plant babies is easy. Pull them straight out of rain-softened ground. Set the roots in a pot of muddy water until ready to plant. A hole 3 inches wide is plenty. Yesterday, I moved 10 in 2 hours. 🌱 #nativeplants #californianativeplants

The Ride-Hail Utopia That Got Stuck in Traffic Uber and Lyft said they would ease congestion. Instead they made it worse.

Don’t forget, for many years #Uber insisted loudly that it would reduce traffic in cities. Instead, Uber drivers cruise without passengers 40% of the time. Uber and Lyft no longer claim they reduce traffic. They now admit they increase congestion.

So much for β€œmaking cities better…”

It's with heavy hearts that we share that Claude, our beloved albino alligator, has passed away at the age of 30. Claude brought joy to millions of people at the Academy and across the world during his 17 year tenure. We will miss him dearly. 🀍

As winter flooding looms, it's worth noting that a young street tree in an asphalt surface can prevent 60% of the rain that falls on it from reaching the ground, even when not in leaf.

Increasing the low levels of urban tree cover should be a strategic national priority.

A β€œsafer than humans” driverless car ran over a beloved bodega cat in SF today. RIP KitKat, you deserved better. We all deserve better than a technology that doesn’t fix our transportation crisis, endangers us all, all while further enriching billionaires.

These Bay Area Restaurants Are Offering Free Food to SNAP Recipients Amid a government shutdown that will cut off aid for 42 million Americans, local food scene folks plan to pick up the slack.

While the feds continue to play stupid games, SNAP recipients are set to lose food aid for the next month. In the Bay Area, a growing number of restaurants are stepping up to help, and we're maintaining the list. Share with anyone who needs it. www.coyotemedia.org/these-bay-ar...
