We need #microclimate data to understand demographic responses to climate! We illustrate this with 3 years of demographic data across 37 populations of a long-lived forest herb: Lathyrus vernus.

Check it out here in the ESA journal #Ecology:

Hi! Would love to be added. I work on large-scale plant diversity patterns and change related to land use and climate. 🌱🌳🌲

🌿 We need to raise the profile of #bryophyte ecological research 🌿 (and also a bryophyte emoji!)

In this opinion piece, we as a group of #ECRs outline barriers in bryophyte research and provide recommendations to overcome them across institutional levels & disciplines.

Effects of climate on population dynamics might therefore be best understood as a combination of direct effects & effects mediated by competitive interactions. We therefore need to include both types to reliably assess how species abundances and distributions will respond to a changing climate.

We transplanted 2 moss species with different climate niches (one "warm" species, one "cold" species), together & alone across a latitudinal gradient in πŸ‡ΈπŸ‡ͺ. When growing alone both species responded positively to warmer 🌑️, but this reversed for the cold species when growing next to the warm species.

I am happy to be able to share the last paper from my PhD now published in Ecography:
doi.org/10.1111/ecog...
Here we show how competitive interactions can modify, and even reverse, the direct effects of climate on organism performance.

This opinion paper is a direct outcome of a meeting between bryophyte-interested ECRs at the GFΓ– conference last year.
Thanks to coauthors for a great collaboration!

Early Career Researchers advocate for more bryophyte ecology!

We have summed up the importance of bryophytes for ecological research, difficulties existing for ECRs to pursue a bryophyte focused research career & what we & the ecological society can do about it
