Creators on Creating: Keith O'Shaughnessy
Who are some of your literary influences? Do you have any favorite poems, short stories, or books to teach as a professor at Camden County College? By and large the writers I admire most are not...
"Truth be told, I’m not sure I’m prolific so much as just prolix...My tongue is too in love with the sensation of utterance to hold its peace for long."

"READ - there’s something I tell my students at Bowdoin: “Good writers are made from good readers; great writers are made from great readers.” -Anthony Walton
"My process is to be writing or thinking about writing pretty much all the time. Even if I am watching a basketball game I am probably actually thinking about, mulling, some writing task I need to be dealing with, or some specific writing problem I need to solve. And I trust my unconscious, in that if I am not “thinking” about something, I trust that I am 'actually thinking about it.'" -Anthony Walton
"I am hyperconscious of sound, both overtly, and what I would call covertly. I loved poets like Gerard Manley Hopkins and Paul Laurence Dunbar growing up, the music that their poems made, and I think that prepared me for the absolute beauty of poets like Seamus Heaney, who pushed that play to a music you can feel on your tongue, in the muscles of your mouth." -Anthony Walton

The Last Summer poem by Soon Jones:
I blanket the grass with dried grains
so the black bantams and their chicks
can rake their claws through something.
The dogs gently nip the cows’ noses,
keeping them at bay while I fill the troughs
with earthy-sweet molasses feed.
Hands riddled with plant fibers,
I pick the last of the summer
squash, tomatoes, bell peppers.
When fall arrives for my birthday
my stepmother, strung out on opioids,
will grab a gun and warn my father
we better disappear by morning
or else. We’ll take what we can
and leave the rest behind.
A few years after, all of this land
will be sold to the mill.
Turned to profit,
the dogs sold, the cows slaughtered,
the hens left to fend for themselves.
Weeds and brush will overtake everything
until the mill saws it down,
plants orderly rows of pine for paper,
peanuts for cash.
But for now, I sit on the back porch steps
and husk silver queens, dig out green worms
and toss them to the chickens.
