Definitely, though the Wing kids are far from the most blatant about it. Some of it definitely feels like a "Gotta have a teen protagonist for sales" rather than say Victory having the youngest one and going all in on the brutality of war.

Obviously, anything a writer writes is something they decided to write, but the magic/trick is in making it sound like your characters are doing/feeling things for their own reasons and backgrounds, rather than "Because I the writer decided to do this.", which is something that reads less "real".

I mean, not that that has anything to do with whether or not the narrative feels particularly believable or flows well though, which is what "forced" writing actually implies. I myself would have preferred a more focused throughline on this arc where Dorothy had time to grapple with these feelings.

I mean you say that, but up until very recently I, someone who reads a lot of wlw fiction felt like the comic was telegraphing Dorothy as very straight until recently (and that her "friends" "jokes" or "jealousy" was just that)? Seems reasonable that someone could feel like it came out of nowhere.

Interestingly enough, Stan Lee basically said this once about western comic heroes.

Admittedly, the trick is in selling whatever story as being a thing that makes sense to have happened, but sometimes the "fans" need a reminder how fiction actually works anyways.

That's definitely a problem I've had with the character on rewatches of the various series where a few of the episodes were interesting enough to justify the snarky reality warping plot device known as Q back when I didn't know anything about the actor.

That said I do agree with this sentiment here anyways? That people shouldn't be expected to work for companies who want to exploit them if they don't have to.

My complaint is that many of the people using the phrase in my local area just want other people to be exploited just like them.

Never claimed to be perfect. I do at least try to avoid punching down when possible however, or being a hypocrite for that matter as is the case when I hear people who don't want to work complaining that "nobody does". For context: I do live somewhere where that line is just a political buzzword.

One of the only roles I've ever seen where Tom Cruise acting like none of this even matters at all seems like characterization and not just him phoning it in for the paycheck I'm never sure he actually needs.

Fiction can also shape the times in which we live to some degree, after all even fiction is usually a combination of hopes for the future, worries about the present, and things that are hard to say directly without couching them in a world that actually bothers to make sense of any of it.

Gotta find someone to blame that doesn't call the whole overarching approach to things that includes the media landscape into question.

As well as to the ones who just have no choice but to live with difficult location based dynamics. Surviving might not technically be winning, but it ain't losing either, so please try to stick in there.

Even beyond this probably more important stuff, it'd also be extremely boring to have everyone think and feel the exact same things as you all the time about everything.

The interesting part is the way we can learn from each other's experiences and ways of portraying the world.

That said its a pretty fun show, if you like "Genius" crime procedural type shows. It was just paid for a narcissistic compulsory liar and the actors/writers had to figure out how to make the show work regardless. Still yeah kind of messed up even if Walter O'Brian wasn't hijacking traumas for it.
