Michelle is not active ok Xitter as far as I can tell. BTW, she is as warm and brilliant in person as she comes across on TV. I miss working with her!

I give you my word. I'll read what you have shared. What I take away is that while the Kardashev Type II civilization is practically and thermodynamically impossible as described in his paper, there are still viable options for building a Dyson Sphere and harvesting some fraction of the energy.

28.03.2025 02:10 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Exactly. And imagine what happens to planetary orbits when you move Jupiter's mass from 5 AU to 2 AU!

25.03.2025 10:53 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

You can build a solid opaque shell, but it can't absorb and transmit all the Sun's energy for use. It will radiate in the IR, as you said. Kardashev consumes 10^33 ergs/sec and transmits 10^33 erg/sec for use. That's impossible with Jupiter's mass of material.

24.03.2025 21:37 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Kardeshev states โ‰ˆ4ร—10^33 ergs/sec, (iALL the Sun's output) is consumed and transmitted by his sphere.

I agree with you that one can make an array that absorbs SOME solar energy and transmits it. Do you agree it is impossible to absorb and use ALL the Sun's radiation with Jupiter's mass alone?

24.03.2025 21:33 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

You make my point!

24.03.2025 21:22 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

While I have read Kardashev's paper, I have not read Dysons. I did not realize that any old leaky, spherical array qualifies as a Dyson sphere. I should have clearly stated that a Dyson sphere satisfying the Kardashev Type II civilization requirements is impossible.

24.03.2025 21:22 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

You're right in part. I deviate from the literature but not from Kardashev: "II-a civilization capable of harnessing the energy radiated by its own star...; energy consumption at โ‰ˆ4ร—10^33 erg/sec." That's ALL the radiation. The same value is to be transmitted for use. I stayed true to Kardashev.

24.03.2025 21:18 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Thanks for the correction of which came first. Kardashev says, "II - a civilization capable of harnessing the energy radiate by its own star...; energy consumption at โ‰ˆ4 ร— 10^33 erg/sec." His table also has a table with the same number for power transmission. Sure sounds like he's harnessing ALL.

24.03.2025 21:06 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Thanks for the link! I'm basing my comments on the Kardashev scale Type II civilization description, which inspired the Dyson Sphere. It specifically requires harnessing all of the star's energy, i.e., no leaks. If that requirement is relaxed, we're talking about two different definitions.

Just wrapped IMAP Day at Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab - what a great event! A fabulous panel led by Hakeem Oluseyi with three of the IMAP team leads, activities for kids, and lots of fun swag for all. We got to see the spacecraft through the viewing area into the clean room (no pics allowed)...

I also realized that every stellar envelope is already a natural Dyson Sphere. They all leak copiously! So the standard Dyson Sphere is an artificial envelope around the natural envelope. But this outer, Jupiter-mass envelope, is 1/800th the mass and 1/900th the volume of the Sun's natural envelope.

I took Jupiter's non-H/He mass and distributed it into a uniform spherical shell with a radius of two solar radii and the same density of water, then calculated the sphere's thickness. I got ~1 km thick. Redoing the calculation at 2 AU, I get a shell thickness of ~2.6 cm.

I'm addressing a subtle point that is not obvious in the posted video. The Dyson sphere I'm referring to is one that achieves Kardashev Scale Type II civilizationโ€”one that can harness ALL or most of its star's energy. There ain't enough mass to do that.
