A lot of what people call dating sims now are like the asthmatic pug evolution of the genre, bred for maximum dopamine, minimum friction. But the real ones - for those who know what they're looking for - have teeth.
To elaborate on this: Dating *SIMS* are what it says on the tin. The genre started not with ironic visual novels with minimal interaction, but crunchy life sims where you're juggling school, jobs, romance, etc and there's a very real chance of failure.
Those games could be surprisingly hardcore.
