A good while ago now, I was asked by my publisher, Hodder, who I was working with at the time, if I would do a picture for one of their colleagues who was leaving to go and live in Barcelona. I was told she was a big fan of my work, and was crazy about cows. So this is what I did.

Playing: no agenda, start scribbling, look for faces. Mistakes and lots of rubbing out (which create interesting marks in themselves), all part of the process.
It fun, making up random faces, characters…what is their story?
A5 sketchbook, 4B pencil. Typically between 10-20 mins.

- Complaining about mouse-breath.
- You’re always leaving your food pellets lying around…

Sounded like they’re past the honeymoon-phase of their relationship.

Something about corvids calls charcoal to me…expressive and messy 🖤

Walked around this dozy cat in the middle of the pavement yesterday. Love the idea it surrendered to the moment; suddenly feeling sleepy and deciding “yup, this is happening…and it’s happening right now.”

We can learn a lot from cats.
