Tonight’s Senate vote on the federal government shutdown should have been a time for strength.

Instead we saw capitulation and a betrayal of working Americans.

The American people need more from their leaders.

The Founding Fathers passionately ransacked the classical historians for ways to escape the classical fate. One cannot easily overstate the anxiety that attended this search or the relevance they found in the ancient texts. Thomas Jefferson thought Tacitus β€œthe first writer of the world without a single exception. His book is a compound of history and morality of which we have no other example.” β€œTo live without having a Cicero and a Tacitus at hand,” said John Quincy Adams, a founding son, β€œseems to me as if it was a privation of one of my limbs.” As Adams’s cousin William Smith Shaw put it, β€œThe writings of Tacitus display the weakness of a falling empire and the morals of a degenerate age. . . . They form the subject of deep meditation for all statesmen who wish to raise their country to glory; to continue it in power, or preserve it from ruin.” Polybius was almost as crucialβ€”for delineating the cycle of birth, growth, and decay that constituted the destiny of states; and for shadowing forth the mixed constitution with balanced powers that the Founding Fathers seized as remedy.

The classical indoctrination reinforced the Calvinist judgment that life was a ghastly risk and that this was a time of probation for America. For the history of antiquity did not teach the inevitability of progress. It taught the perishability of republics, the transience of glory, the mutability of human affairs. The traditional emphasis on John Locke as the father of us all obscures the darker strain in the thought of the Founders recently recalled by J. G. A. Pocockβ€”the strain of classical republicanism and civic humanism that led from Machiavelli’s Discourses on Livy through Harrington, the English country party and Montesquieu to the Constitutional Convention. This tradition argued that republics lived and died by virtueβ€”and that in the fullness of time power and luxury inexorably brought corruption and decay. β€œThe Machiavellian moment,” according to Pocock, was the moment in which …

it really gets me how no matter how much the right keeps claiming they're originalists and constitutionalists, they don't actually seem concerned with what the Founders had in mind when it came to opposing corruption

Punishing college students for protesting him.

Pressuring TV networks to fire late night talk show hosts for criticizing him.

Suing newspapers for reporting he doesn’t like.

If this were happening in another country, what would you call it?

I keep wondering where all those ammosexual gun nuts who swore they needed military grade weapons to act against government tyranny are

Where the fuck are they?

They insisted that they needed guns to take up arms against government overreach.

Well here we are. FASCISM is booming on our shores

In her recommendation, Bagdasarian stated,
"Any person over the age of six months without contraindication who has not received a dose of a Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved or-authorized 2025-2026 COVID-19 vaccine may be considered to have an underlying condition that puts them at high risk for severe outcomes from COVID-19 and is thus eligible to receive an age-appropriate dose."

I like this. Since under RFK Jr, Covid shots are now for people with underlying conditions that put them at risk, Michigan’s chief medical executive Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian states that not having the most recent Covid shot constitutes such an underlying condition.
