NSF director Sethuraman Panchanathan, nominated by Trump in 2019, absolutely is a disgrace
Heβs simply stopped paying postdoc fellow salaries until the hypothetical time that their grants are βreviewedβ for consistency w Trumpβs edicts
Heβs canceling climate projects

Derrick Bell's reminds us: The goal is DEFIANCE. Resist oppression, harass those who seek to harm us and our communities. We will not sacrifice Black & Brown people, Trans folks, immigrants, Disabled folks, and all of us at the intersections of multiple oppressions. Defiance is the way forward.

Reporters: Please stop calling things DEI that are not DEI. This is only cementing the propaganda being used to legitimize the dismantling of all types of initiatives that are not DEI as well as legitimize efforts to end civil rights enforcement. Be specific with your language. Be accurate.

Also NEWS -> Pell Grants & federal direct student loans, though not paused, are still among the programs OMB wants more info about by Feb. 7, according to agency instructions. Among other things, OMB is asking whether programs "promote gender ideology" or support "illegal aliens."

Whenever he and his team call something a "hoax" it means they're playing defensive. They know book bans are a losing issue for them. So, don't stop talking about book bans. Highlight every single book ban, all the time. We can organize and win political power by advocating for intellectual freedom.

The assault on NIH is a test for how the national media covers the Trump admin: Trump is shutting down medical research!
That is easy to communicate. Will they treat it as a 5 alarm fire in a way that forces the government to respond, or will they downplay & caveat it?

A planet parade of Venus, Saturn, Jupiter and Mars shines in the skies this month
All month, Venus, Saturn, Jupiter and Mars will appear to line up and be bright enough to see with the naked eye in the first few hours after dark. This weekend, Venus and Saturn get especially cozy.

How University of Arizona Global Campus' Online Recruitment Ads Drain Its Finances
It can cost UAGC more than $11,500 just to enroll one student.
The taxpayer-supported University of Arizona is paying nearly $12,000 *per student* to Google and Facebook to recruit customers for the scandal-ridden for-profit online college it bought for $1 and rebranded. Read more from my colleague @jbeowulf.bsky.social :

The End of the DEI Era
As Donald Trump returns to the White House, a newly emboldened anti-DEI bloc has gained powerful allies.
"The New Segregationists" is a more accurate headline.
You could go through nearly this entire article replacing "anti-DEI" with "segregationist," and it would work.
Homogeneity is the opposite of diversity, which is what they aim for.

The anti-DEI/CRT/LGBTQ movement from the last few years has always been about removing LGBTQ people from public life and re-segregating public spaces. The movement and its associated politicians started with books and curriculum, but they didn't end there. They won't end there.

The myth that diversifying businesses led to discrimination against more qualified people has *always* been belied by the empirical evidence from hiring audit studies (which consistently show anti-Black discrimination) and basic demographic facts. Yet, the myth persists, comforting fragile egos.

Under Jim Crow, business leaders sometimes complained that the system of separate bathrooms, waterfountains, and waiting rooms was losing money. But they were afraid of white supremacist terrorists (and their fans in legislatures) so they lost money to keep them happy.

It's useful to think of NYT as a cult that worships power, influence & the status quo. They will normalize anything as long as it allows them to retain their position. The institution selects for people who share this perspective. Chomsky isn't always right but he was right on this.
