I still remember a playthrough of Gold I had (the original, not Heart Gold) where my very first encounter in the very first tuft of grass, before I had access to Pokeballs, was a shiny Rattata and then I never saw another shiny for the rest of the playthrough.

The game just taunted me.

If there was really no way to make a physical release work (Mortal Kombats 11 and 1 on Switch had as much of the game as possible on a cartridge with a partial download for the rest), it honestly would have been better optics if they just made it a digital release and skipped the key-card entirely.
