I agree that we must protect academic freedom. But this is compatible with a firm public condemnation –that I miss from many colleagues– of the brutal genocide & human right atrocities that the Israeli government has been, and is, committing every day against civilians in Gaza [5, end]

It is also very problematic to read statements saying that the ISS suspension has “real” personal & professional consequences for our colleagues, while Palestinian sociologists and academics (many murdered, suffering from starvation, with universities demolished) are ignored, not even mentioned [4]

If one refers to academic freedom & plurality, one should be coherent: treat all organisations & colleagues equally; btw, as far as I know, Russian Sociological Association (RSA) & Israeli Sociological Society (ISS) are equally silent about their government military actions since 2022 & 2023 [3]

I write this, first, acknowledging my respect and esteem to the RC28 friends, colleagues and Board. I write this precisely because I fully believe in freedom of speech, democracy, and diversity of opinions [2]

I deeply appreciate so many friends & colleagues from @isa-rc28.bsky.social.

Yet, the recent RC28-community statement condemning @isa-sociology.org suspension of ISS –without apparent similar statement on RSS suspension in years– seems biased & contradictory.

I share my email to RC28 Board [1]

A huge contradiction of @isa-rc28.bsky.social statement is that it took 1 month to condemn Israeli Sociological Society (ISS) suspension. Has RC28 condemned the Russian Sociological Association (RSA) suspension after years? I think both ISS & RSA have been silent about government military action.

This is exactly one of the several questions I have. My understanding is that ISS has not made any public statement condemning the genocide in Gaza.
