Opinion: David Bergen: Why I won’t be attending the Giller Prize gala this year My family is Mennonite, and one of the tenets of the Mennonite faith is pacifism.

"How can I celebrate literary excellence at a gala that’s financially tied to the destruction of a small strip of land where most books have been burned and destroyed?"

β€œHard times are coming, when we’ll be wanting the voices of writers who can see alternatives to how we live now, can see through our fear-stricken society and its obsessive technologies to other ways of being, and even imagine real grounds for hope.”– Ursula K. Le Guin

a book cover where the background is composed of moths and webs on top of a field of reeds. the title and author - the juniper tree by barbara comyns - are centered on title page.

just finished barbara comyns's juniper tree which flips the grimm fairy tale of a similar name (mother trudy) on it's head. comyns has such a way with her hurried, off-kilter prose that makes the banal so haunting. lovely read for autumn. β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…ΒΌ/β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…
