Yes! It kills my head so bad! I’ve wondered how everyone does it so easily. But these photos make it look so worthwhile 😍

You gotta play it cool, don’t let the bird know you care. Look at OTHER birds. It will fly in begging for attention. (Or at least this strategy worked for me)

A post from Washington State Governor Bob Ferguson, saying, β€œvery proud to announce the Washington state. Department of Health will now process all request to change gender designation on birth certificates within three business days. Previously, there was as much as a 10 month wait. A team of more than a dozen people work through the weekend to clear the departments backlog of more than 500 requests. We’re speeding up government and centering the people.β€œ

It can be a struggle to read bands! I got lucky with some close birds in good light!

PSA for those that submit bird bands: the right-side-up digit on dusky Canada geese goes first, then the two sideways digits. I submitted 13 codes the wrong way and someone at the bird banding lab is trying to sort them for me 😬. #bandedbirds #birding #oregonbirds #canadagoose #duskycanadagoose

Photo of title page of free online PDF Identifying West Coast Forest Lichens, by Brodo, Craig and Rhoades. It uses photos from that heavenly tome, Lichens of North America, and in the 44 page guide beneath each photo are clear and vivid descriptions of each lichen's features, its habitats and range, and chemical clues if you use chemistry to confirm IDs. It is very handy in the field, and due to the excellent descriptions, it might be useful if guidebook photos are unhelpful for any reason. The picture is not a link to the PDF! You need to google the title to find it. The guide is produced by the Canadian Museum of Nature and Environment Canada, among others. I've used it a lot and really recommend it!

This is an excellent free resource that I highly recommend to fellow westcoast PNW lichen enthusiasts! I could not make a link, but if you google the title the 44pg PDF comes up, and it is *so* handy for when you've found a delightful lichen and have no guidebook.

Birds eating dead things is always fun. This Golden-crowned Sparrow and a bunch of its friends were sharing a deer carcass at dusk last night.
