MY BRILLIANT CAREER tells a small story but finds its power in big moments. Its unique staging, where the actors are also the musicians, is elevated by the energy and talent of everyone on stage. Empowering, funny, and a very Australian take on finding one’s authentic voice in a crazy, unfair world.

Either I’ve seen too many rom-coms for these tropes to feel anything but tired and unacceptable, or I’m simply not part of the target market for PEOPLE WE MEET ON VACATION.

A movie about travel that barely shows interesting destinations. A comedy that’s not funny. A clumsy, chaotic lead who’s meant to be cute. And, of course, a mediocre dance-floor scene that’s meant to win over the crowd.

The core of the Avatar franchise is a critique of colonisation and capitalism, and the 3rd film returns to these thematic roots. Despite the immersive universe, enhanced by our first experience of the panoramic ScreenX format, the latest film did not really add anything significant to the mythology.

Touching on potentially melodramatic territory without crossing into it, the tender film RENTAL FAMILY explores longing and human connection through the lens of a culture that prefers to leave words and emotions unsaid. Light-hearted and quietly entertaining.

However, similar to contemporary series with groundbreaking ideas, the conclusion feels formulaic. The series was good at asking questions but less confident in sitting with them, choosing a resolution for emotional payoff and extended storylines, designed for profit rather than artful storytelling.

The premise of PLURIBUS makes for an interesting philosophical & ethical thought experiment. The creative use of an insufferable main character as the narrative tool to explore the new dystopian reality, the execution of the sci-fi origins, & the immersive world-building make it a compelling watch.

The 2025 iteration of I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER not only feels forced, but also tries too hard to appear intelligent, integrating themes of trauma into its dialogue and meta-references through the legacy characters. The writing is so poor that some moments feel almost like parody.
