17.02.2026 17:37 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Close up of 4 fingernails with a sparkly red manicure. Across my middle and ring finger nails, I painted a realistic white horse cantering with flames for its mane and tail. Its nearer front leg is raised, and there are flames coming from its hoof as well. On the ring nail under the horseβs back end there are low flames on the ground. I painted higher flames on the pinkie nail, suggesting that the horse is leaving a trail of flames behind it as it passes.
Happy lunar new year yβall!

A photo of an easel with a few inches of blue stained wood visible on the left, and a finished black ink woodcut print on the right. The wood is partially carved, primarily with a sort of woodgrain pattern similar to the foreground of the finished print. The finished print depicts a spider perched between a spindle of wool and pair of scissors. The scissors have snipped the wool leaving a section laying on the surface below.
Pulled out a Spider print to reference the foreground texture for my current piece. When carving it can be easy to lose sight of the tone you're aiming for in the finished art. Being able to glance over at my prior work helps keep my line spacing in check. #art #woodcut #wip
13.02.2026 22:51 β π 23 π 5 π¬ 1 π 1The technique for fluid nail art is very similar to that for fluid acrylic art. You mix a little silicone oil in with a few colours of nail polish to promote cell formation. To use this in a mani, you create the design in a thin layer on a mat, allow it to dry, peel it off, and adhere to the nails.
14.02.2026 19:20 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0A close-up of my thumb nail. The swirled pink and white fluid art decal has two slightly overlapping hearts punched out of it to expose the reddish-brown base colour. I painted a tiny arrow piercing both hearts in a diagonal line moving from the feathered end in the lower left to the arrowhead in the upper right.
A close up of the other four nails on the same hand. The middle nail is an inversion of the thumb nail, with the punched-out fluid art hearts from the thumb adhered to the same reddish base in the same slightly overlapping arrangement. I also painted the same arrow shape, but moving the opposite direction, from the feathered end in the upper right to the arrowhead in the lower left. The index and ring fingers are both fluid art decals with scattered hearts punched out - two on the index nail and three on the ring nail. The pinkie nail has a single fluid art broken heart in the middle over the same reddish base used in the rest. For this nail I took one of the punched-out hearts and cut it in a zig-zag line down the centre, then placed it on the nail with a slight gap between the two sides.
Happy obligatory romantic observance day!
I did these fluid art nails during my Thursday night live stream this week. I created fluid art decals, let them dry, then used a heart-shaped hole punch to create negative and positive hearts that I applied to the nails. I then hand-painted the details.
SHEβS FINISHED! My 5-foot-long Enterprise D oil painting is complete after nearly 100 hours of work!
I remember being 13 years old or so and trying to draw her and it was so hard, and all I wanted was to be able to do something like this. Truly a dream come true. π₯°π

She went on to become an expert in myriapods, mites, and ticks, restoring hundreds of thousands of specimens, classifying thousands, and co-identifying 40 type specimens. She now has a mite species named for her: Pygmephorus lutterloughae.

Sophie Lutterlough worked in the Smithsonian NMNH at a time when African Americans werenβt allowed in scientific roles there. She was hired as an elevator operator. She exhaustively learnt all there was to know about the museum itself, then asked for a job preparing insects for the collections.

The background for each is a translucent blue-green polish with tiny metallic flakes. On the index nail, I painted a termite with a yellow and orange abdomen, thorax, and legs, and a large brown head and mandibles. On the middle nail, a tiny white rocket slingshots around the moon, trailed by a dashed line. The ring finger nail features and large brown mite with yellow legs and head, and the pinkie nail has two black ants in a line.

Every Thursday night I live stream nail art. For my first stream of Black History Month I asked chat to choose between 4 Black scientists Iβd pre-selected. Chat, in their usual fashion, said βall 4, pleaseβ. Hence: Margaret Collins, Kathrine Johnson, Sophie Lutterlough, and Charles Henry Turner.
