"... soliciting the input of raging primitives"

Mel Brooks was absolutely merciless there.

...and after a few generations of that forced omission, folks can blindly jump from

"we don't talk about __"

to

"__ isn't really a factor in life as I know it."

(Which is partly how you get people saying with 100% certainty "the NFL wasn't political" or "Superman was never about politics".)

Completely agree it's practiced in service of maintaining current power structures.

Teaching the kids it's bad manners to talk about a specific policy or party or candidate would be a survival strategy when your ability to work can be cut off by someone who doesn't like your politics.

A white ceramic coffee mug. On the side, someone has drawn a simple frog, staring blankly. It is labelled "Frog".

The same mug, but on the other side someone has drawn the frog sitting up on its haunches, holding out both hands in a gesture of refusal, with its face turned away from a pair of featureless shoes.
It is labelled "Frog wants no clogs".

A photo of Gavin Newsom at the 2023 California gubernatorial swearing in ceremony. He is a white man, appears to be in relatively good health, with a full head of brunette hair, slicked back from his forehead, wearing a dark blue suit and matching tie with a white shirt. He stands behind a podium with the state seal of California on it, and is looking to his left.

Unfortunately I've got these two faces stuck in the same mental file, and I always confuse them.

Happy International Women's Day!

Remember, when in doubt, do as Stagecoach Mary Fields did, and either headbutt, shoot it, set it on fire, or let your horses trample it.

a cartoon character with glasses and a long nose looks at the joker Alt: A shot from Batman: The Animated Series, panning over the faces of Penguin, Joker, Two Face and Poison Ivy, all looking deeply unimpressed after hearing that Killer Croc almost got Batman by throwing a rock at him.

A digitally drawn homage to the George Herriman comic strip Krazy Kat. Starting left of frame we see yellow Ignatz Mouse having just thrown a brick which is sailing across the center of the frame and in another instant will bash the oblivious Krazy Kat (a blue bipedal cartoon cat wearing a red scarf) in the back of the head as he walks innocently to the right. Everything is drawn in rough black pen and colored in pale washes. A speech bubble from Ignatz reads ‘Maybe it will…’, the word ’Happen’ appears in the whooshing trail of the sailing brick, and a final speech bubble belonging to the Kat reads ‘…Today’.

Maybe to allow central security to lock folks out of *everything* if they get fired.

"You have 15 minutes to vacate the premises, security will escort you to clear out your desk, you may have one (1) document box for personal effects. And no, you may not do a last poo in the company's toilets."

[We see a close up of a young white male, tanned, white teeth, coiffed hair clearly an influencer on social media. It is an image such as you see when social media posts are shown on the news. In the corner of the screen is named a location: DUBAI. He is staring slightly off-camera for several silent panels of the comic strip. His eyes move slightly. He is having a thought.]

From off-screen a newsreader’s commentary comes:

NEWSREADER:

Extraordinary images here

of an expat in Dubai

[The influencer’s eybrows raise slightly]

…Having their first ever geopolitical thought.

[CUT TO a BBC news scene. The BBC newsreader CLIVE MYRIE is talking to an interviewee next to the screen showing the social media influencer’s face. The interviewee’s name is David Jones].

CLIVE MYRIE:

To explain the significance of this moment we’re joined by David Jones, our Expat Thoughts correspondent

DAVID JONES:

Clive, this is momentous

It was caught on film at the end of an Instagram post titled: ‘Dubai Is Brilliant’.

[Pointing at the screen, the influencer’s expression still the same]

You can clearly see in the eyebrows here, the dawning realisation that there *might* be something in the world beyond his dickhead self.

It marks a *huge* departure from all the Dubai Expat’s previous thoughts.

CLIVE MYRIE:

Which are…?

DAVID JONES:

You've Got To Get Yourself Out Here Mate, Everything Is So Clean, I Don't Have To Pay Taxes,
I Am Incurious As To Why I Do Not Have To Pay Taxes, and Spa.

CLIVE MYRIE:

And might we see an expansion of these new Thoughts in coming days?

DAVID JONES:

I think we can expect to see:

“I Deserve To Be Airlifted By A Country I Pay No Tax To”

CLIVE MYRIE:

Mmm.

[Ends]

Hmm, it's easy to overlook the assumptions about appearance and to make a careless jump to casual discrimination.

I think I'd rather not do that.

Thanks for the spot.

a man is laying on a stretcher with the words `` it 's made of people '' written above him . Alt: A gif of the final scene of the 1973 movie "Soylent Green". Police detective Robert Thorn (played by Charleton Heston) is being carried out on a stretcher as he shouts the terrible truth he has learned about his dystopian society: Soylent Green, the food stuff which only barely sustains the impoverished masses, is "made of people". Absolutely no one gives a damn as he screams about it. Also: this movie is over 50 years old - you get no spoiler warnings for a movie old enough to get a senior citizen bus pass.
