My photo shows a Roman-era wooden toy sword made from oak. It is dark brown in colour, displayed against a cream and pale green background. It is carved to look like an adult sword, with a semi-circular handle, a blade with pointed tip, and a semi-circular guard embellished with a centrally-set oval polished stone. The wood is remarkably well-preserved except for a break across the hilt. Excavated in 2017 from the cavalry barracks at Vindolanda, a fort on the Roman Empireβs northern frontier. Dated c. AD 120.
At almost 2,000 years old, this childβs wooden toy sword is a remarkable survival from Roman times!
Found in the living quarters of the cavalry barracks at Vindolanda fort in 2017. Dated c.120 AD. Chesterholm Museum π· by me

...but that's also a great way to lose your sword and possibly get dragged out of the saddle, if it gets stuck.
Anyway, I've been on a bit of a Sub-Roman Britain kick lately, thanks to a project I'm working on, and decided to rewatch "King Arthur" to amuse myself. And boy, was I amused.

The sword is a Roman spatha, which is specifically designed for cavalry. Like most cavalry swords, it's intended to be SWUNG at an opponent as you gallop past (this is why cavalry sabers are curved).
Arthur is not only using his weapon, in the EXACT SCENARIO IT WAS DESIGNED FOR, wrongly...
(content warning: PG-13 movie violence)
In this scene, Arthur flips his sword so he can stab a "Woad" (presumably a Pict) as he gallops past. I know reverse grip is cool, but that's not how you use a sword like that. www.youtube.com/watch?v=vNOT...
I have a love/hate relationship with the 2004 film "King Arthur." On the one hand, it probably ignited my interest in Arthuriana and the historical basis for it. On the other hand, the more I got into the subject, the more ridiculous the movie became. And I just noticed a new piece of ridiculousness

Itβs been ten years since the publication of The Shepherdβs Crown, the last book Terry Pratchett completed before he died. Once the spine on this one was cracked, there were no more new Pratchetts to look forward to, and I know a lot of Discworld readers who were, understandably, with that sad reality in mind, reluctant to finish - or even start - this one because it felt like the final closing of a door. But I also know that Terry wanted his books to be read and enjoyed far more than he wanted them kept on a shelf. And as time passes it becomes ever more apparent how much the Discworld books reward re-visiting, perpetually revealing something new, literary gems Terry had hidden away for a second or third, or even more, re-read. Every Pratchett is to some degree an unread Pratchett, including the ones youβve already enjoyed and including The Shepherdβs Crown. So the greatest way to honour Terryβs legacy is to pull that book youβve been saving off the shelf, make a nice cup of tea and settle down to read the story he wrote for you. Enjoy. Rob Wilkins Wiltshire, August 2025
On 27th August 2015, The Shepherd's Crown, the last book Sir Terry Pratchett completed before he died, was published.
To mark the ten year anniversary, we have a message from Rob Wilkins:
The drow ranger Drizzt Do'Urden and his faithful companion, the panther Guenhwyvar, in a gloomy forest.
I just discovered that you can actually make panthers in Hero Forge, so I updated Guenhwyvar accordingly.

Iβve been a little obsessed with #heroforge lately (just look at my pfp) and here are some creations Iβm particularly proud of.
