❄️ CryoSCOPE at the National Snow Seminar 2024 – Oulu, Finland ❄️

CryoSCOPE researcher Pertti Ala-aho (University of Oulu) participated in the two-day National Snow Seminar (30–31 Oct), which gathered snow experts, researchers, and students to discuss the latest innovations in snow science.

🌡️ Early results show isotopes can trace sublimation during snowfall-free periods, a key step in improving climate and water predictions.

In Switzerand, Isabella Anglin (ETH Zürich, WSL/SLF) led snow sampling at #Weissfluhjoch to link surface snow isotopes with sublimation from an eddy-flux tower.

Recent milestones in the Chalong River catchment and Panikhar include:
📈 Installation of stream gauge and turbidity sensors in the Chalong River / Panikhar
🌡️ Deployment of an automatic weather station (AWS) in Panikhar
🌦️ Installation of another AWS in the Outwash region of Chalong catchment

🤝 Swiss and Indian researchers have joined forces in Ladakh to advance CryoSCOPE’s mission of understanding how the Himalayan cryosphere is changing.

This key snow depth monitoring setup was led by Prankur Sharma, Gopika Das K, and Pawan Singh under the supervision of Saurabh Vijay from IIT Roorkee , as well as a local citizen scientist -Illiyas bhai-who is responsible for managing and updating the team on regular basis.

A follow-up field campaign will collect snow density and snow water equivalent at both sites, extending observations and enabling:
✔️ Calibration and validation of satellite-based SAR snow depth estimates
✔️ A foundation for scaling monitoring efforts across the Himalaya’s high-altitude regions

In August 2025, CryoSCOPE partners in India installed two time-lapse camera systems above 3300 m a.s.l. in Ladakh to track snow depth at sub-daily scales. Each system records at 1-hour intervals.

-Snow sublimation in the Swiss Alps using isotopes & eddy covariance

CryoSCOPE at IMC 2025!

We presented a session on “Integrating cryosphere–atmosphere–hydrosphere dynamics: from process-level insights to large-scale modelling”, convened by Harsh Beria and co-convened by Mathieu Gravey, Marius G. Floriancic, Shaakir Shabir Dar and Rakesh K Hooda.

CryoSCOPE aims to bring science closer to communities and policymakers. We deliver localised forecasts and hazard maps to aid sustainable resource management and hazard protection.
