This assumes that schools are fully reimbursed for the cost of free school meals. Commonly the meals cost far in excess of the money provided to schools. This ultimately leads to lower portions, higher prices on school meals & costs passed to parents not eligible for FSM

School boards of Governors in UK have very little direct authority over what books may be used in a school. Regulations are very different in “Academy” schools, but in reality most tend to replicate local authority schools in most respects.

I always wonder about stats that say stuff like “x% can’t read beyond the standard of an 11 year old”. Most 11 year olds have learned most of what they’re going to learn about reading. I remember that I’d read Animal Farm, 1984 & Brave New World whilst I was 11. Also most of Agatha Christie’s novels
