Christ, me too. A bleak moment.

Enjoy your adorably ugly-cute new buddy! Get ready for a whole lotta good luck coming your way.

A picture of a carved wooden Indonesian Garuda with bulging eyes and alarming fangs. His right claw is raised and it's supposed to be menacing, but it actually just makes him look like he's waving cutely.

I think it's a Garuda! Super powerful good-luck guardian who will protect you from serpents. They're hideous little gargoyles who will 100% fuck up your enemies. My family lived in Indonesia and adopted this cute little monster, and none of us have ever been bitten by snakes. Scientific proof.

Thanks, friend. Really appreciate it.

An American expat friend of mine in Maastricht who does drug rehab policy work says the Dutch approach is light-years ahead of the US in terms of both individual human dignity and societal outcomes. It doesn't shock me that Dutch criminal justice + rehabilitation is managed better too. Sincere envy.

I believe that here in the US, criminals with severe mental illnesses are sent to specialized clinics within the prison system where they receive psychiatric care. But I think the care is pretty cheap, and of course lots of ill people still get sent to the main prison anyway.

Shameful. So damn sad.

Genuinely lolled at your "turning the brain off and on" metaphor -- what a neatly perfect description. Mine now!!

Those cooling gel patches make you look like a proper weirdo but man, they do genuinely help. I'm not convinced it's even the cooling effect that does it -- I sort of suspect they might just be a pleasant but unfamiliar sensory distraction until the meds kick in. But they work!

Ohhhhh smart call with pre-processing. Always so dismaying to help yourself to a nice little bit of pickle, and then pull out a piece of lime roughly the size of a dachshund. Why do bad pickle things happen to good pickle people?

Lime pickle sour cream with latkes is a SENSATIONAL idea. How dare you.

My whole body is thrumming with rage. I feel like a massive bronze gong that's just been struck with a sledgehammer.

I don't even know what to do with fury this intense that doesn't put me in personal legal jeopardy.

It's the Hemmingway effect, I think: it happens gradually, then suddenly.

Bad-faith actors have been hollowing out the foundations for so long without Americans fully understanding the extent of the erosion. The decline started decades ago, but the collapse happens fast.

The Eternal Ham by Sadie Stein September 25, 2015 – Dorothy Parker is said to have been the author of one of the best quotes in history: “Eternity is a ham and two people.” Like many such quips, it’s hard

I know cruel jokes are pressure-release valves, and I know folks need an outlet for their rage and helplessness, but man, this stuff is such a bummer.

This isn't kindergarten, and nobody likes being scolded. But suggesting that disability is the result of karma is some really deeply cursed shit.

Oh god, that pic makes me so nerrrrrrvous. I couldn't watch you do it; I'd be hiding in the kitchen with a tea towel over my head.

The end result is truly fabulous, you gutsy thing.

Nana Gannon, you queen. I'll raise a pie in her honour this Christmas. That stuffed acorn squash is an AMAZING idea. Love love love the thought.

I've only ever made mincemeat on the stove, but you're smart to suggest the slow cooker. Great idea.

My quince tree went crazy this year and produced 70+ fruit, so I'm thinking of throwing a few of them in the mix too. But do you think that might spoil the delicious tomatoey essence of it?

What a brilliant idea. Thank you so much for the inspiration and details -- I'm really truly delighted to try it! The mince pies this Christmas are going to be so good.

Green tomato mincemeat! I never imagined such a thing was possible!

Did you use a published recipe or did you try the personal experimental approach? (I would be super interested in the details cuz I have 2+ lbs of greenies too small to slice + fry in cornmeal for the usual late-season feasting.)

Thanks for the fab dinner inspiration and the lovely pottery linkage. I'm gonna send the link to my Mum and say very, very subtly: "Wouldn't this mug make a great Christmas present for SOMEBODY???"

The whole arrangement of US Thanksgiving is nonsensical. Why are we repeating the whole turkey-potatoes-stuffing nexus less than a month apart? Why are we having a harvest fest in LATE NOVEMBER? Them decorative gourds been off the vine for 2 months baby!

Gonna write letters. Mean ones. To somebody.

It's not punitive, it's extending the pleasure! There's a sincere delight to be had in sharing a glorious bounty, you know? It doubles the satisfaction.

You plunder the neighborhood, calculate your hoard, share the booty, and then revel in your good fortune. It's the pirate way!

A person cannot listen to Sam Cooke singing Twistin' the Night Away without feeling their soul start to shimmy. It’s impossible. It’s the 4th law of thermodynamics, nothing you can do to stop it.
