Following last week’s formal letter to the University of Nottingham, AHGBI has now issued a second statement—this time to the University of Leicester—regarding the proposed closure of its Department of Modern Languages.

It ranks 6th of 47 nationwide and 3rd in the Russell Group in REF 2021, and plays a key role in PhD training through Midlands4Cities.

Nottingham has included languages at its core since 1881, and its Section of Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies is recognised for its exceptional breadth across two languages and three continents—unique outside London and Oxbridge.

The decision to withdraw Modern Languages degree courses from UCAS ahead of the Council meeting on 25 November is deeply troubling.

This would make Nottingham the only Russell Group university without Modern Languages and leave the East Midlands without degree-level language study.

AHGBI, led by Professor Sarah Wright, opposes the University of Nottingham’s move to suspend—and effectively close—all Modern Languages degrees. SRUK/CERU, led by Dr Carlos Soler Montes, has also raised concerns.

AHGBI urges immediate reconsideration.
