Cy Vance's push for some sort of constitutional monarchy was the out-there "left" position within the Carter admin!

Zbig Brzezinski, Carter's National Security Advisor during the Iranian Revolution, wanted to tell the Shah that they'd support him just full-on slaughtering the demonstrators en masse.

Initially misread this as THE BOY AND THE HEROIN and wow, that would suggest something *quite* different...

When you see people loudly claim that they don't hate Muslims, immigrants, trans people, etc while repeating and ignoring discrimination and bigotry towards them, while acting affronted at the suggestion they do, it's often b/c they're implicitly categorising this group in the 1st box, not the 2nd.

Put another way:

Everyone who thinks they don't hate cricket fans is correct that they don't.

But some people who think that they don't hate Black people are wrong about that.

When we're talking about demographic groups who there is a substantial context of official and/or discrimination and prejudice against, whether you personally "hate" or are prejudiced towards them is a more complicated question, that can include unconsciously internalised and indirect elements.

09.03.2026 00:40 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

The below framework is useful here. In discussions of hatred towards "generic" minorities, e.g. people whose favourite colour is green, or who prefer Pepsi to Coke, it's simpler: only Question 1 is significant. If you don't have a conscious emotional hostility towards them, then you don't hate them.

With regard to the question of prejudice towards minority group, I think a key question remains "Do you recognise this demographic group as an equally legitimate thing to be, something which, ideally, we should ensure is no harder to fully participate in society as this thing than not this thing?"

I think you can argue that for why Western Europe doesn't, but that still leaves a lot of variation. e.g. the Ottomans were one long dynasty, unlike their Byzantine predecessors or their Iranian neighbours. China had loads of dynasties but Japan one long one, etc

It's kind of fascinating how the idea of dynastic transition, in which a powerful local warlord can topple the existing royal family and just proclaim a new one, became an integral part of some monarchical states (Egypt, Rome, China, Iran, etc) but not others.

I mean, probably need to hold the Georgia seats at least

The Khamenei dynasty has now ruled for the same number of generations as the Pahlavi dynasty did.

Yeah I think a lot of people not on Twitter and not caught up with stuff still think of that as a matter of a few dubious likes or shares. Which was maybe true several years ago but she's clearly pretty deep into a vicious obsession now.

I think on here people can more easily tell the difference between the genuinely oblivious and the malicious sealions, but in the offline world there are a lot more of the former than there are on here!

Oh on here, for sure, I was meaning more among more offline random voters.

Fascinating that people who insist they don't hate trans people and have no problem with them feel the need to reply to posts like this bemoaning those who do.

08.03.2026 19:50 β€” πŸ‘ 6    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

And I don't mean they know and just agree with it, some people are just genuinely unaware, sometimes because of indifference but also sometimes because they have their own stuff to worry about!

08.03.2026 19:48 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Tbf, some people genuinely don't know or register it

Another for the list.

(Amazing how people who say they don't hate trans people nevertheless pile in to reply to posts lamenting hatred of trans people)

The lowest-ranking team to ever reach reach the FA Cup last 8 (at least, since there's been a league system allowing ranking down that far) are Lincoln City in 2017 - at the time, top of the National League, 93rd in the English league pyramid.

08.03.2026 19:22 β€” πŸ‘ 20    πŸ” 5    πŸ’¬ 3    πŸ“Œ 0

Sure, I don't think they think much about the public finances generally, but I think the Tory "Labour crashed the economy because they spent too much and got us into debt!" made a decent number of people think "Huh, yeah, I guess that sounds right?"

08.03.2026 15:25 β€” πŸ‘ 13    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

A lot of voters have this weird conflation of fiscal balance and a good economy, thinking they're inherently related or even synonymous.

08.03.2026 15:13 β€” πŸ‘ 21    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 1

I've won the same number of elections as the Alba Party

08.03.2026 14:32 β€” πŸ‘ 11    πŸ” 2    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

HAHAHAHA

08.03.2026 14:31 β€” πŸ‘ 12    πŸ” 2    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Fwiw I think this is part and parcel of the same thing. A lot of young voters feel they've known nothing but governments that have catered to both the economic and social preferences of older generations and the hope that Labour might somewhat ameliorate that was shattered pretty quickly.

08.03.2026 12:18 β€” πŸ‘ 21    πŸ” 3    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 2

Yes, I think this is an important point and why trans folks feel particularly more betrayed and angry about Labour than they would the Tories or Reform. As with immigrants, it's an attack Labour are choosing to collaborate in rather than oppose.

08.03.2026 12:15 β€” πŸ‘ 44    πŸ” 5    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 1

Currently, yes.
