Just incredible how, despite having every other party already, anti-trans obsessives are determined that even one clearly pro-trans party should not be allowed.

It's honestly hard to imagine the trauma of being outed as intersex on such a public stage. You might not have known yourself. You might be from a v conservative country where that information seriously endangers you.

This is not theoretical. Intersex women outed like this have killed themselves.

See also the Stanford thing. Wherever it came from, it's something that has embedded itself in her brain and cannot be shifted.

I mean at least that cuts out some distance, this would basically cut out nothing.

Even if you didn't know about the mountains, the logic of "Why don't we ignore the already-existing natural waterway and instead build an entirely new one at great expense and effort right next to it?" is amazing

The similarity of language is honestly quite striking

Aside from the childish unseriousness, the thing that just really stands out to be here is just the artistic and cultural leeching. They can't produce anything anyone actually wants to watch themselves so they just pinch a load of clips to repurpose.

I think Thornberry's heart is in the right place on trans rights (and pretty consistently has been) even if her language is a bit clumsy, so I'm content to overlook that.

It's fascinating how back in the day the language of changing sex was pretty ubiquitous and uncontroversial in discussions of trans people - that was considered weird enough without needing to devise further delegitimising arguments.

Those school children and students of ten years ago, with their highly moralistic, Manichean politics and otherworldly theories on gender and race, are now the voters of today.
They are also our first post-literate generation, a demographic which doesn't read newspapers, which doesn't read books willingly, who instead get their politics on their smartphones from emotive TikTok videos devoid of nuance, depth and context.
This is the demographic with a reduced attention span that doesn't even listen to radio bulletins or watch the news from reputed broadcasting organisations.

I spent a lot of the 2010s explaining that the anti-woke terror was the rage of old men who are going to be dead soon, knowing that when they’re gone, the blue-haired, variously-gendered kids will inherit the Earth and start chucking their most cherished bullshit into the bin. And whaddaya know?

Yeah, I suspect for Farage, Tice et al that's actually actually the point - they *want* a more limited and exclusive access to education, they miss the classism!

06.03.2026 11:53 β€” πŸ‘ 3    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Yeah, when they were introduced they were progress on what came before, that guaranteed universal secondary education of some sort and provided a route of sorts to social mobility, but didn't upend the class system or stretch war-ravaged resources too far. But nowadays really no need for it.

Which is basically just a naturalistic fallacy, the idea that the way you are without conscious human intervention is the way you're "supposed to be", etc

Some of it is just the inevitable Boomer "back in my day..." rose-tinted glasses. But I do think for Farage, Tice and many other Reformers, the classism and more restricted access to education is the whole point.

Like, the selective tiered system wasn't just introduced for the sake of selectivity, it was a compromise of the wartime government that both Labour and Tories could accept and that didn't strain war-decimated public resources too badly.

It doesn't even make sense in the original logic of the Tripartite System. The problems of the pre-war system that grammar schools were supposed to be part of solving, like virtually no working-class kids going to secondary school at all, just don't exist any more.

It sounds a bit clichΓ© and silly to say there are "different types of racist", but it does somewhat characterise the GOP. The typical GOP *voter* sounds like your racist granddad, but the typical GOP *activist* sounds like a school shooter.
