Trump‘s DOJ’s been suspiciously lenient on Sinaloa Cartel members too. Zambada & other top captures allowed to plead out/avoid trial, death penalty taken off table. Barr personally intervened to release Cienfuegos in ‘19 after LAX bust, he was H-2 affiliated which was a Sinaloa splinter group.

Not quite. Trump’s gone suspiciously easy on Sinaloa Cartel specifically. DOJ‘s top captures (Zambada etc) all allowed to plea out instead of stand trial + all spared death penalty by Trump DOJ. Barr personally intervened to release Cienfuegos in 19, who was H-2 a splinter group from Sinaloa Crtl.

Presumably state AGs could/should also open their own investigations given some of these allegations clearly overlap with violations of all kind of state laws…

Starmer obv has a lot of issues & you cover them well, but I’ve long thought his woeful polling *in part* reflects this disconnect - the public at large think his premiership is about traditional public services issues vs what‘s actually occupying his premiership: the collapse of the global order

Grosse Point Blank is one of the greatest and most underrated films of all time. An incredible work of pop culture art.

My editorial bias is anti bullshit and anti-democratic backsliding. I have been highly critical of US posture toward MX, highly critical of CS’ acquiescence to Trump, and highly critical of Trump/Maga in general. It’s not the media’s role to cheerlead power, its role is to watchdog.

I live UK, all contributors live in either Mexico or DC. I spent 10 years in and out of MX & thought there was need for English language pub to cover 12th largest economy / US’ biggest trade partner. Launch time coincides with me leaving a job. On no one’s payroll. Not everything is a conspiracy.

No hedge funds here mate. The issue with Sheinbaum’s water agenda is it‘s not funded and mostly consists of rhetoric designed to appeal to superficial sycophants. I’d love for her to cut from Pemex and properly invest in Mexico’s environment. Sadly, she will not. Thx for reading. Yours, Andrew Law

The Ken comparison is the most accurate imo. But Ken was Labour to his core & always coded Labour. Mamdani is Dem to his core, regardless of top level policy proposals. He’s fully coded D, operates within a clear left tradition of his party. D establishment rejected him for not waiting his turn.

Issue for platforms like us is that the conversation on BlueSky is overwhelmingly US/UK focused. If you’re focused on Mexico, for instance, hardly anyone relevant to that conversation is here - much less having a vibrant conversation!

There are high profile right wing US personalities who have been barred from Britain for less than what Elon Musk did yesterday, and by Theresa May no less! The lack of response is a real indictment of Starmer’s inability to lead and unfitness to the moment he’s in.

This week Claudia Sheinbaum branded ex-president Felipe Calderón a traitor. But for all her talk of sovereignty, Sheinbaum has yet to stand up to Washington the way Calderón once did. It’s an awkward truth that was on display again this week.

And most MAGA folk would likely point to that as a reason to feel unsafe - and an indictment of the state - in Mexico, still, without a trace of irony.

Without doubt she’s expanding on AMLO’s script. I don’t and wouldn’t argue that she is copying Trump, but I do argue she and her project need to be understood as Trump’s parallel, which is a different thing.

Claudia Sheinbaum’s ‘end of neoliberalism’ looks like Donald Trump’s statist oligarchy. Her ‘poverty reduction’ hides a collapse in healthcare access. Her murder stats mask a disappearance crisis. She‘s redefining the terms of reality itself in a direct parallel to Trump’s assault on truth.
