No more excuses. Even if the returns are still unevenly distributed, AI tools let you be both: a present parent and a highly productive professional living up to your work ethic, at least if your job typically involves staring at a screen.

Amazing study showing that deactivating social media improved mental health.

[It has so many coauthors that the sample size was sufficient to run the RCT on themselves.]

I’m sorry that I cannot provide my recommendation. This is not due to your module grade, but the fact that we had very limited personal interaction.

As you know, students now make extensive use of AI tools, which can make it difficult to assess the extent to which written work reflects their own independent reasoning. Meeting regularly and discussing ideas in depth is usually the only reliable way for me to understand a student’s qualities and potential.

For these reasons, I generally reserve my references for students with whom I have had repeated and sustained engagement over time, as this is the only basis on which I can provide a well-rounded and meaningful assessment.

My door is always open for office hours and I encourage all students to come but few make use of it. In your case, I simply do not have enough direct insight into your work to write a reference that would be fair or helpful to you.

I wish you all the very best with your applications.

I will be sending this email a lot this year. Feel free to tell me it's problematic, but I've had it with students who don't show up and expect me to be in their corner.

I was on a German panel last night, where *every speaker* had strong French links (study etc).
And every speaker expressed massive dismay over the state of Franco-German defence-industrial cooperation. How can we not get this right?!

Graph showing a strong negative correlation between GDP per capita and unequal gender role norms.

While economists have extensively studied gender norms affecting women, masculinity norms – the informal rules that guide and constrain the behaviours of boys and men – remain underexplored. This column reviews how such norms can shape economic outcomes in labour markets, health, education, households, and politics. Drawing on new survey data from 87,000 individuals across 70 countries, the authors show that adherence to masculinity norms strongly predicts men's labour supply, risk-taking, health behaviours, and support for authoritarian leadership.

Our explanation: they are generalists, and that skill set is in high demand given high industry uncertainty. Generalists are good at curbing volatility, but tend to be old unless they come from a consulting background. Consultant CEOsβ€˜ young age may thus be a contributing factor to firm growth.

Very pleased that our local projections dif-in-dif paper is now out in the Journal of Applied Econometrics. Joint with @dgirardi.bsky.social, Jorda, and Taylor.

It's a tool that we think many applied economists will find useful (indeed many already have).
