This is what I do with pronouns in emails as well; my real name is gender neutral and I point out its obviously helpful for people who are making their acquaintance with me for the first time. Does help people see it as a purely practical thing.

If the important thing is for people to -know- they have a position, that seems like something you could publish in an article without giving them space to be persuasive about their bad opinion.

Perhaps you think this doesn't matter because who you publish has no impact on the public debate or public opinion, in which case I would have to ask why you are bothering to publish them at all.

To expand on this, if you, as an editor, are deciding whom to publish based on whose opinion you - arbitrarily - think is most important for everyone to hear, you are in fact making a supportive choice there in elevating who is able to most loudly contribute to the public debate.

Clarifying moment for me was trying to convince my working class, right leaning aunt that climate change was an actual problem and she responded "if you're right, I'll be dead anyway" (she has grand kids) and I just kind of gave up on trying to change minds on the substance of issues after that.

If this all sounds like I'm contemptuous of a lot of the American electorate, well, look at who won the last presidential election with a plurality of the popular vote.

Part of the reason it is so easy for our government to bomb countries at random is that the median American absolutely does not give a shit about foreign policy. I think that is bad and would change it if I knew how, but until then, you have to reach people where they are, which is often very dumb.
