A hand upon her rib; he strums her like a lyre
and she in turn sings sweetly;
as a nightingale bathing in the soft fire
of the morning; and he held her softly

as a leaf nurses a dewdrop on its tip.
Her tepid lip upon his, swallowed in his hunger.

I resent the Earth
who sits here indiscriminate,
and mothers all things.

Who can see the locust;
It's wicked foot,
It's rusting wing,
And yet, still hold space for it.

But, look at how the lioness
pulls the guts out from her cub
and spits them in the soil

Most days the garden’s almost enough: little pink flowers on the sage, even though the man said we couldn’t eat it. Not this kind. And I said, Then, gosh. What’s the point? The flowers themselves, I suppose. The rain came and then the hail came and my love brought them in. Even tipped over they look optimistic. I know it’s too late to envy the flowers. That century’s over and done. And hope? That’s a jinx. But I did set them right. I patted them a little. And prayed for myself, which is embarrassing to admit in this day and age. But I did it. Because no one was looking or listening anyway.

Heavy summer juices

There upon the tree
came a flock of hunters
thirsty for a drink
of something sweet.

So, they put their mouths
to the sharp, splintered bark,
sucking sweet from thorns
as a child upon a tit.

Hear the buzzing in the pollen
where the honey-bee has fallen.
Is it sweeter in a sunflower?
Does it wilt upon the hour?

Purr upon her petal sweetly,
take her dew and drink it neatly
then away into the sky

The moon looks down,
she sees her sister,
ragged and tumerous,
her body bruised and plucked
of all it's hair.
And when she speaks,
dark plumes of ash fall from black lips.

The moon smiles.
She's only been sick a dozen times.
First in 69.
Last in 72.

I won’t say “happy” because it isn’t for me. I get overwhelmed thinking about it. Thinking about the many lives lost, the deliberate lack of action. This is a somber day. A day of sadness and reflection.
