Itch! by @manylittlewords.bsky.social is not a novel that merely gets under your skin, but settles and lays eggs there before getting to work at gnawing its way out again. βLord of Misrule,β goes feral and pink here, and for lack of a better word, itβs a doozy.

I adore it.
28.07.2025 17:20 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I'm sorry you had to go through such a rough experience π€
28.07.2025 14:51 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I also meant to acknowledge that PND affects partners too. My bad.
28.07.2025 14:50 β π 10 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Using any illness or disability as the antagonist in fiction and media is increasingly becoming unpalatable to me.
Especially when these stories are written by people with little to no direct experience.
There are other scary fruits within reach. Pick those and leave postnatal health alone maybe
Playing lego and potty training while feeling hollow inside. Bouncing babies and singing nursery rhymes while smiling and wondering how to get through the next two hours.
Realising, by the time your child is four years old, that youre actually very unwell.
We need more realistic rep, desperately
Where are the movies and books where new parents soldier on regardless of their illness, because that is the real horror. Loving your child and putting yourself in a box even though you want nothing more than to cease existing because there is no other choice.
28.07.2025 14:45 β π 12 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0I speak as someone who wrote a novel about my own very personal experiences with it. I wanted to explore this idea that I was evil, wrong and a bad mother through the lens of horror because I can see how stubborn this narrative is outside of own experience and it haunts me still.
28.07.2025 14:43 β π 12 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0These movies rarely get it right. There are so many nuanced ways PND can manifest and make a new parent's life hell that dont revolve around the usual stereotypes of harming a child, neglect, coldness etc. Its an incredibly complex condition and rooted in shame, guilt, fear and more shame.
28.07.2025 14:42 β π 13 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0Please stop using post natal depression as the evil monster replacement in horror books and movies. It's such a damaging narrative to perpetuate. Many women don't vocalise their pain or discuss their symptoms, which can include intrusive thoughts amongst other awful things, out of shame and stigma
